Character Creation – Building the Foundation: Crafting a Compelling Background
This is where we lay the groundwork for your characters and their captivating backgrounds. We all know that a well-crafted backstory can make or break a character, so let’s create some fictional biographies that will leave readers begging for more.
Think of it as building the foundation of a skyscraper – without a solid backstory, your character might just end up being as interesting as watching paint dry. But fear not! We’re here to help you craft compelling character histories that will have readers on the edge of their seats.
Whether your character is a daring adventurer or an everyday hero, we’ll guide you through the process of creating an intriguing background that will add depth and dimension to your story.
By the time we’re done, your characters won’t just be names on a page – they’ll be living, breathing entities with stories worth telling. So let’s get cracking and build those backstories that will make readers say, “Wow, this character is awesome!”
Since we are creating characters from scratch, we have the opportunity to ask ourselves a few questions and tailor our characters to fit the needs of our stories.
Where is my character as I am writing them ‘today’?
Since we know the story we’re writing, and how our character fits into the story, that knowledge helps us determine their background. There is a natural progression that readers will understand. It has to fit. So, we have to make our characters’ lives make sense.
- What made them who they are?
- What led them to this particular point in time?
Character Creation – Unleashing Personality: Infusing Traits That Pop!
Welcome to the personality playground, where we’re all about infusing traits that make your characters pop like a confetti cannon! Forget about those cookie-cutter personalities – we’re here to unleash the quirks, habits, and distinctive characteristics that will have readers falling head over heels for your creations.
Gone are the days of boring protagonists and one-dimensional sidekicks. It’s time to dig deep into the treasure trove of character personality traits and unearth those hidden gems that will make your characters unforgettable. From their unique quirks to their unconventional habits, you need to create a cast of individuals who leap off the page with personality!
So use your imagination and get wild with your character concoctions. Whether it’s an eccentric obsession with collecting rubber ducks or a penchant for speaking in rhymes, we’ll help you sprinkle that extra dash of spice onto your characters’ lives. Get ready for traits that pop like popcorn at a movie marathon – because when it comes to crafting unforgettable personalities, there’s no such thing as too much flavor!
During character creation, obviously, personality is important. No one wants to read a ho-hum character. Readers need a reason to love (or hate) your character. Middle-of-the-road feelings won’t cut it here. But, again, your character’s personality, like their background, has to conform with their actions. They have to be feasible.
You don’t typically see a shy, frail accountant who works in a cubical and also spends their Friday nights as the reigning champ in the local fight club. It needs to make sense. Character traits are a part of who we are and what we do and they also design who we are and what we do. People who are painfully shy don’t volunteer for open mic night at the local comedy club. People who have been in abusive relationships tend to be more wary of others.
When you are deciding on characteristics to give your characters, ask yourself questions to see if the traits fit.
- If my character had this trait, how would they have gotten it? Naturally or learned?
- If my character has this trait, how would that make them react to the situation in my story?
- How would this character trait affect their decision-making?
- How would others react to my character with this trait?
Character Creation – Picturing Perfection: Describing Physical Appearance with Flair
Part of character creation is describing physical appearance with flair! It’s time to bring those characters to life and make them more than just words on a page. It is so important to learn to create vivid imagery that will make your readers see your characters in all their glory.
In real life, we don’t have to describe everything in detail because people have eyes. What isn’t said, is still seen. When we write, we have to write a picture; a painting in glorious color. Our readers have to be able to conjure an image of our character in order to have the full effect.
Before you start describing their appearance, you need to know it. Gather pictures; images of specific qualities you want in your character. Give yourself something visual to use in creating descriptions.
When it comes to describing a character’s physical appearance, it’s important to strike the right balance. You want to give enough details to paint a picture, but not so much that you leave nothing to the imagination. Let’s face it, nobody wants an entire paragraph dedicated solely to someone’s eyebrow shape (though it does seem that some girls today think that might be the case).
The key is to make these descriptions human and relatable. Sure, your protagonist may have flawless skin and piercing blue eyes, but what else makes them unique? Do they have a quirky scar from a childhood mishap? Maybe they have an infectious smile that lights up a room. These little details can go a long way in making your characters feel real.
Let me remind you, however, that no one is perfect. Don’t make your characters perfect because they won’t be relatable. Readers need a connection with your characters. The leading lady may well be a visual perfection in the eyes of the leading man, but maybe her laugh is loud and rattling or maybe she snores. Make them human.
With a flick of your metaphorical paintbrush, you can start writing a beautiful picture! With some flair and creativity, you’ll create visual descriptions that will make your readers fall head over heels for your characters (figuratively speaking, of course).
Character Creation – Talking the Talk: Developing Authentic Speech Patterns and Dialogue
When it comes to writing, developing authentic speech patterns and dialogue is like trying to master a foreign language. But fear not, it is possible for you to make it through this linguistic adventure.
First and foremost, let’s talk about speech patterns in writing. Just like in real life, each character should have their own unique way of speaking. Whether it’s a posh aristocrat or a laid-back surfer dude, their words should reflect their personality. So don’t be afraid to let your characters’ voices shine through!
Now onto dialogue writing tips. Remember that dialogue should be snappy and engaging. Nobody wants to read a conversation that sounds like two robots having a chat about the weather. Inject some humor, sprinkle in some conflict, and voila! You’ve got yourself some captivating dialogue.
And let’s not forget about character voice and tone. Think of it as giving each character their own special flavor of ice cream (or gelato if you’re feeling fancy). Whether it’s sarcastic sprinkles or sweet sincerity, make sure their voice aligns with who they are as individuals.
So my fellow wordsmiths, go forth and conquer the world of authentic speech patterns and dialogue! Let your characters speak volumes with their words (and maybe throw in a pun or two for good measure). Happy writing!
Mastering the Art of Character Creation is a Must
Creating characters that readers cannot get enough of is how you also create fans. If I find a character that I am obsessed with, I want more! I watch and wait for the author to add more to a series with my chosen character. (I’ve even been known to email an author to find out if there were any more books coming in the series!) That is the result of mastering the art of character creation.
