Types of Conflict – Conflict is not noise. It is pressure.
And pressure is what forces a story to move.
Most manuscripts rely on only one type of conflict. That is why they feel flat, even when “things happen.”
There are three layers. All three matter.
Types of Conflict – 1. External Conflict
This is the visible problem.
The antagonist. The war. The rival. The ticking clock.
It answers:
What stands in the protagonist’s way?
Without it, there is no plot.
But external conflict alone feels mechanical.
Types of Conflict – 2. Internal Conflict
This is the emotional fracture inside the protagonist.
Fear. Shame. Pride. Trauma. Doubt.
It answers:
Why is this difficult for them personally?
Internal conflict is what turns events into meaning.
Types of Conflict – 3. Relational Conflict
This is friction between characters.
Misaligned goals. Betrayal. Secrets. Power struggles.
It answers:
How does this strain relationships?
Relational conflict multiplies tension because it affects loyalty, trust, and identity.
Types of Conflict – When Conflict Is Missing
If your story feels shallow:
You likely have only external conflict.
If your story feels stagnant:
Escalation may be absent. Conflict repeats without intensifying.
If your climax feels underwhelming:
One of the three conflict layers may never have fully developed.
A strong novel braids all three together. When one tightens, the others react.
