She didn’t trust him.

The problem?

He might be the only reason she’s still alive.

Captured Episode 2

Lexi didn’t pull away.

That was her first mistake.

The second was noticing the heat of his hand against her wrist… steady, controlled, unshaken by the chaos just feet away.

Not adrenaline.

Training.

The voices moved closer.

“Clear that side.”

“Check behind the buildings.”

Lexi’s pulse slowed instead of spiking.

Focus sharpened.

Count them.

Two in front.

At least one behind.

Possibly more.

Not random.

Coordinated.

Which meant—

This wasn’t chance.

They were looking for her.

Her gaze flicked to the man beside her.

“You want to explain why I’m suddenly popular?” she whispered.

His eyes didn’t leave the alley entrance. “Not here.”

Not a denial.

Not good.

A shadow crossed the opening again.

Closer this time.

Too close.

Lexi shifted her weight, preparing to move.

His grip tightened.

“Don’t.”

She angled her head just enough to look at him. “Standing still isn’t my style.”

His mouth almost moved. Almost.

“Getting shot shouldn’t be either.”

Footsteps.

Right outside the alley now.

Lexi’s body coiled.

Fight or run—

“Back exit,” he murmured.

She hadn’t seen one.

Which meant he had.

Another mark against trusting him.

But staying here?

Not an option.

A voice cut through the night.

“I saw movement—”

That was enough.

Lexi twisted free and moved.

Fast.

He followed immediately.

Of course he did.

The alley narrowed before opening into a second passage she hadn’t clocked before. Darker. Tighter. Cleaner escape route.

He reached past her, shoving open a metal door she hadn’t noticed.

“Inside.”

She hesitated half a second.

Too long.

A shout erupted behind them.

“There!”

Decision made.

Lexi slipped through the doorway just as he slammed it shut behind them, throwing the bolt into place.

Silence dropped heavy.

Not safe.

Just quieter.

Lexi turned on him immediately, backing up just enough to create space—but not enough to lose advantage.

“Start talking.”

He didn’t answer right away.

Just watched her.

Measured.

Assessing.

Like he was deciding how much she could handle.

Or how much he was willing to give.

“You weren’t supposed to be here,” he said finally.

Her jaw tightened. “Funny. I was about to say the same thing.”

A beat.

Then—

“You’re in deeper than you think, Lexi.”

Not a warning.

A fact.

Her pulse ticked once, hard.

“I don’t even know who you are.”

That, finally, got a reaction.

Something flickered in his expression—brief, controlled, gone almost instantly.

“You will.”

Not reassuring.

Not even close.

A sound hit the door behind them.

Metal rattling.

Someone testing it.

Lexi didn’t look away from him.

“Then you better start talking fast.”

He stepped closer.

Not enough to touch.

Enough to shift the air between them.

“When that door opens,” he said quietly, “you’re going to have to decide if you trust me.”

Her heart kicked harder.

Not because of the threat.

Because of the certainty in his voice.

“And if I don’t?” she asked.

Another hit against the door.

Harder this time.

He didn’t hesitate.

“Then you’re not getting out of here.”
