Captured Episode 3

The door didn’t hold.

And neither did the truth.

The door shuddered under another hit.

Harder.

Closer to breaking.

Lexi didn’t flinch.

Her focus stayed locked on him.

“You’ve got about five seconds to start making sense,” she said.

He didn’t rush.

Didn’t panic.

That was the problem.

“You were flagged,” he said.

Lexi’s brow tightened. “By who?”

Another slam against the door.

Metal groaned.

He stepped closer, lowering his voice—not out of fear, but control.

“People you don’t want attention from.”

Not helpful.

“Try again.”

His jaw shifted slightly, like he was choosing what to give up.

“They think you have something.”

Lexi’s pulse hit once—hard enough to feel.

“I don’t.”

His eyes held hers.

Unblinking.

“That’s not what they believe.”

The door rattled violently.

A crack split through the frame.

Time was gone.

Lexi moved first.

She grabbed the nearest object—a rusted pipe leaning against the wall—and tested its weight.

Not ideal.

Good enough.

“If they come through that door,” she said, “I’m not waiting around to be taken.”

Something almost like approval flickered across his face.

“Good.”

Not comforting.

At all.

Another hit.

The bolt strained.

Lexi angled slightly, positioning herself where she could see both the door and him.

“Last chance,” she said. “Who are you?”

A beat.

Then—

“Someone trying to keep you alive.”

The door burst inward.

Wood splintered.

Metal screamed.

Two men surged through the opening.

Lexi didn’t hesitate.

She swung.

The pipe connected with a crack that echoed through the room. The first man dropped hard, momentum carrying him sideways.

The second lunged.

She shifted, but he was faster than she expected—

A shot rang out.

Deafening in the enclosed space.

The second man hit the ground.

Silence crashed in behind it.

Lexi froze.

The smell of gunpowder burned sharp in the air.

Slowly, she turned.

He stood behind her, arm extended, gun steady.

Unshaken.

Controlled.

Watching her now instead of them.

Her pulse didn’t slow.

Didn’t even try.

Because something had just changed.

Not the danger.

Not the situation.

Him.

“You shoot like that often?” she asked, voice steady despite everything.

A flicker of something unreadable crossed his expression.

“Only when I have to.”

Not a joke.

Not reassurance.

A fact.

Lexi tightened her grip on the pipe.

“You said they think I have something.”

He lowered the gun slightly—but not all the way.

“They’re not wrong.”

Her stomach dropped.

Slow.

Heavy.

“What does that mean?”

He stepped closer.

Too close.

Again.

“It means,” he said quietly, “you’re the reason this just started.”
