Captured Episode 4
Trust wasn’t the problem.
Survival was.
The gunshot still echoed in Lexi’s ears.
But it wasn’t the sound that stuck.
It was the way he stood after.
Steady.
Unshaken.
Like pulling a trigger wasn’t a decision.
Just part of the job.
Lexi tightened her grip on the pipe.
“You want to try that again,” she said slowly, “but with actual answers this time?”
His gaze flicked to the door, then back to her.
Always calculating.
Always measuring.
“There isn’t time.”
“Then make time.”
A beat.
Then—
“They think you took something.”
Her stomach dropped.
“I didn’t.”
“I believe you.”
That stopped her.
Not because of the words.
Because of how easily he said them.
No hesitation.
No doubt.
That was new.
“And yet,” she said, “you’re still not explaining anything.”
His jaw tightened slightly.
Conflict.
Internal.
Good.
That meant she wasn’t the only one being kept in the dark.
“They hit a location tonight,” he said. “Something went missing.”
“And somehow that lands on me?”
His eyes locked onto hers.
“You were there.”
Her pulse spiked.
Sharp.
Unavoidable.
“I don’t even know what you’re talking about.”
Another sound outside.
Not voices this time.
Movement.
More controlled.
More careful.
Backup.
“They’re not going to stop,” he said quietly.
No panic.
Just fact.
Lexi shifted her stance.
Closer to him without meaning to.
“Then we don’t stay.”
A flicker of approval.
Again.
“You catch on fast.”
“Don’t get used to it.”
Almost a smile.
Almost.
It disappeared just as quickly.
“There’s a way out,” he said. “But it’s not clean.”
Lexi exhaled slowly.
Of course it wasn’t.
Nothing about this night had been.
“Tell me something I don’t know.”
His gaze dropped briefly to her hand—still wrapped tight around the pipe.
Then back up.
“It means trusting me long enough to get you out.”
There it was again.
That word.
Trust.
Like it belonged here.
Like it made sense.
It didn’t.
Not yet.
Maybe not ever.
Another sound.
Closer.
Time was gone again.
Lexi made the call.
Not because she trusted him.
Because she didn’t have a better option.
“Fine,” she said. “You lead.”
His eyes sharpened.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
Like he’d been waiting for that.
“Stay close.”
She almost laughed.
“Don’t push it.”
He moved anyway—toward a narrow hallway she hadn’t noticed before.
Of course he had.
Of course he knew the exits.
Lexi followed.
Not because she trusted him.
Not because she believed him.
But because something about this felt bigger than a mistake.
Bigger than bad timing.
Bigger than coincidence.
And if he was right—
If she really was the reason this started—
Then walking away wasn’t an option anymore.
