Captured Episode 6
He didn’t grab her this time.
He stopped himself.
And somehow…
that hit harder.
Rain soaked through everything in seconds.
Cold. Heavy. relentless.
Lexi didn’t slow.
Didn’t stop.
Didn’t think—
Until his hand caught hers.
Not her wrist this time.
Her hand.
Different.
Intentional.
“Wait.”
She turned sharply. “We don’t have time to—”
“We do if you want to stay alive.”
That again.
Not fear.
Not urgency.
Certainty.
She hated that she was starting to believe him.
They ducked under a narrow overhang, shadows swallowing them just enough to disappear from the street.
For a second—
Just a second—
everything went quiet.
No footsteps.
No shouting.
Just rain.
And him.
Too close.
Again.
Lexi pulled her hand free.
Not gently.
“That’s twice now,” she said.
His brow shifted slightly. “What is?”
“You grabbing me like I’m not going to move on my own.”
Something flickered in his expression.
Brief.
Gone almost immediately.
“You hesitate.”
Her eyes narrowed. “I calculate.”
“Same thing,” he said.
“Not even close.”
A beat.
Rain hitting concrete filled the space between them.
Heavy.
Loud.
Too loud.
Because underneath it—
Something else.
Unspoken.
“You said I remember something,” she said, quieter now.
“Fragments,” he corrected.
“Then help me connect them.”
His gaze held hers.
Longer this time.
Like he was weighing something.
Or deciding.
“You were inside before the breach,” he said. “You saw something leave that building.”
Her pulse spiked.
“Leave how?”
“Not a person.”
That didn’t help.
“That narrows it down,” she muttered.
“You followed it.”
That stopped her.
Cold.
Still.
“I don’t—”
“You did.”
His voice didn’t rise.
Didn’t push.
But it didn’t leave room for argument either.
“You weren’t supposed to,” he continued. “But you did.”
Something shifted in her chest.
A flicker.
A pull.
A memory just out of reach—
A shape.
Movement.
A door.
A flash—
Lexi sucked in a breath.
“Stop,” she said suddenly.
He didn’t speak.
Didn’t interrupt.
Just watched.
Waiting.
She closed her eyes for half a second.
Let it come.
Let it form—
Nothing.
Gone again.
Her frustration snapped sharp.
“I can’t—”
His hand came up.
Not grabbing this time.
Not controlling.
Just… there.
Near her face.
Hovering.
Like he was about to—
He stopped himself.
Barely.
The restraint hit harder than the contact would have.
“You’re close,” he said.
Her eyes opened.
Locked onto his.
Too close.
Again.
Everything about this felt wrong.
The situation.
The danger.
Him.
And the fact that none of it made her step back.
“Why are you helping me?” she asked.
There it was.
The real question.
The one she should have asked earlier.
His jaw tightened.
Just slightly.
Enough to see.
“Because if you don’t figure this out,” he said quietly, “they will.”
Not an answer.
Not really.
“And you?” she pressed.
His gaze didn’t shift.
Didn’t soften.
Didn’t give anything away.
“I’m trying to make sure you’re still standing when it happens.”
The honesty in that—
Raw.
Unfiltered.
Dangerous in a different way.
Lexi exhaled slowly.
“Still not a reason.”
“No,” he said.
A beat.
Then—
“It’s the only one you’re getting.”
Footsteps echoed faintly in the distance.
Closer.
Again.
The moment snapped.
Gone.
Like it hadn’t existed.
“Time’s up,” he said.
Lexi straightened.
Reset.
Back to control.
Back to distance.
But something had shifted.
Something she couldn’t ignore anymore.
Not the danger.
Not the memory.
Not him.
“Fine,” she said. “You lead.”
Again.
This time—
She didn’t hate the decision.
Not as much as she should have.
