Captured Episode 5

They weren’t just looking for her anymore.

They were aiming.

The hallway narrowed until it felt like the walls were closing in.

Lexi stayed close.

Not because she trusted him.

Because losing him right now would be worse.

That realization sat wrong in her chest.

“Slow down,” she said.

He didn’t.

“Not an option.”

Of course it wasn’t.

Nothing about this night had been.

A turn. Another door. A set of stairs.

He moved like he’d mapped it already.

Like he’d known exactly where to go.

Lexi caught his arm.

Hard.

He stopped.

Not startled.

Just… still.

That control again.

“Enough,” she said. “You don’t get to drag me through this without answers.”

His eyes dropped briefly to her hand on his arm.

Then back to her.

“You weren’t supposed to be involved.”

“Funny,” she said. “I keep hearing that.”

“It wasn’t meant for you.”

Her grip tightened.

“Then who?”

A beat.

Too long.

And then—

“You were at the wrong place,” he said. “At the wrong time.”

“No.” Her voice sharpened. “That’s not what this feels like.”

Because it didn’t.

This wasn’t random.

This wasn’t coincidence.

This was targeted.

Her.

“You said they think I have something,” she pressed. “What is it?”

His jaw flexed.

Conflict again.

Good.

That meant he wasn’t fully in control either.

“You were at the site before it went dark,” he said.

Her breath caught.

Just enough to betray her.

He saw it.

Of course he did.

“You remember,” he said quietly.

Not a question.

A statement.

Lexi stepped back.

“Barely.”

That was the truth.

Fragments. Noise. Shadows.

Nothing solid.

“Then think,” he said.

Her pulse ticked harder.

“Not exactly something I can just—”

“Lexi.”

Her name, again.

Different this time.

Lower.

Closer.

Too close.

She looked up.

He hadn’t moved.

But somehow the distance between them had shifted.

Not physical.

Something else.

“You need to remember,” he said.

“Why?”

“Because whatever they’re looking for—”

A sound cut him off.

Not footsteps.

Not voices.

Something sharper.

Closer.

They both turned.

Too late.

The far door slammed open.

Three this time.

Armed.

Focused.

And looking straight at her.

“Down,” he snapped.

Lexi moved.

Not because he told her to.

Because she saw it too.

The intent.

The target.

Her.

A shot cracked through the hallway.

She hit the ground hard, sliding across concrete as another round tore into the wall behind her.

He moved fast.

Faster than before.

Positioning himself between her and them.

Not hesitation.

Not strategy.

Instinct.

Protection.

That hit differently.

“Move,” he said.

She didn’t argue.

Not this time.

They ran.

Down the stairs.

Through a door.

Out into the night—

Rain hit hard, cold, immediate.

Lexi’s breath burned.

Her mind didn’t slow.

Didn’t stop.

Because one thing had just locked into place.

Clear.

Unavoidable.

This wasn’t about being in the wrong place.

This wasn’t about bad timing.

This was about something she had seen.

Something she had forgotten.

And now—

Everyone else wanted it back.
